Hapoel Tel Aviv and Hapoel Beer Sheva have met 116 times in the league to date, but surprisingly – their first meeting took place only on 27.11.1965. The match was held in Ashkelon as part of the seventh round. Beer Sheva took the lead as early as the second minute, but Gideon Tish equalized for Hapoel in the 67th minute, leaving the match at a -1-1 result.

One of the most memorable moments in the rivalry's history was recorded on 3.1.1970, when Hapoel Tel Aviv crushed Beer Sheva at Bloomfield with a score of 0-8 – the highest victory for the Reds in the league. Scoring for Hapoel in this match were: Meir Brenner (1), Yehezkel Hazum (7, 89), George Borba (12, 33, 84), Avraham Cohen (76), and Yehoshua Feigenbaum (88).

Moving forward to the 1997/1998 season, the famous "Laces Season".
